Q: Is GusHealth free? A: Yes. There are no in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Q: Does GusHealth need an internet connection? A: No, not for normal use. Everything works offline. The optional “AI Assist” feature needs internet to talk to Google’s Gemini API.
Q: How do I set up AI Assist? A: Tap Add Meal → AI Assisted, OR Settings → AI Assistant → Google Gemini API key. The in-app walkthrough has 7 steps and takes about 30 seconds. You’ll need a free Google account.
Q: Where is my data stored? A: On your device. Optionally, you can enable iCloud backup in Settings, which syncs your data to your own private iCloud database. The developer of GusHealth has no access to your data either way.
Q: How do I delete all my data? A: Settings → Data → Erase all GusHealth data. Three scopes available: erase logs only, logs + iCloud copy, or everything (full reset including profile and the AI key).
Q: Can I export my data? A: Yes — Settings → Data → Export my data. Produces a single JSON file with everything; share via the iOS share sheet (Files, Mail, AirDrop, etc.).
Q: Why isn’t the widget showing? A: After installing or updating GusHealth, open the app once and let it run for ~10 seconds (this triggers iOS to register the widget extension). Then long-press an empty area of your home screen, tap +, search “GusHealth”.
Q: Does GusHealth share my data with anyone? A: The only data transmitted off your device is (1) the optional iCloud sync to your own private iCloud container and (2) the meal/workout description you type when using AI Assist, which is sent directly from your device to Google’s Gemini API using YOUR Google API key. GusHealth was built by Gus Murad. Calculations use the Mifflin-St Jeor BMR formula, the 2024 ACSM Adult Compendium of Physical Activities for MET values, USDA FoodData Central for nutrition reference data, and the ISSN position-stand for protein recommendations. AI estimates are powered by Google Gemini.
